Pierluigi Scalia and coworkers at the Sbarro Institute for Cancer Research and Molecular Medicine at Temple University in Philadelphia, and the affiliated Italian research organization ISOPROG, have announced the regulatory map of the human EphB4 gene.
For the past 27 years, cord blood transplants have been a life-saving treatment option for thousands of people with leukemia, non-Hodgkins lymphoma, Hodgkins disease and myelodysplastic disorders. Cord blood helps replace cancerous blood cells and replenish a patient's own bone marrow and immune system. Even with its success, researchers are continually looking for ways to improve the transplant process and increase cure rates.
British men who hit their mid-fifties today are half as likely to kill themselves as their fathers and grandfathers.
The Highmark Foundation has awarded schools in Western Pennsylvania with $311,950 in "Creating a Healthy School Environment" grants for innovative, healthy programs that begin in September when local students head back to schools.
