The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, a leader in setting the agenda for diabetes research worldwide, said today that it will begin a diabetes research collaboration with Pfizer, Hadassah Medical Organization, and The Hebrew University of Jerusalem on drugs to replicate and regenerate insulin-producing cells in people with type 1 diabetes.
Bacteria have supplied some of today's most indispensable anti-cancer and anti-bacterial drugs. Yet these compounds comprise only a fraction of their possible offerings. Now, researchers have found a way to unleash their full potential as natural product dispensers.
The U.S. Justice Department is widening a probe into whether Blue Cross Blue Shield health-insurance plans are artificially raising premiums in several states by striking agreements with hospitals that stifle competition from rival insurers. Federal investigators and some state attorneys general have sent civil subpoenas to "Blue" health plans in Missouri, Ohio, Kansas, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and the District of Columbia, according to people familiar with the matter.
In anticipation of the release of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) report on viral hepatitis, the CDC Foundation (the independent nonprofit partner of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), in partnership with CDC's Division of Viral Hepatitis, recently launched the Viral Hepatitis Action Coalition.
Food prices in developing nations continue to be "stubbornly high ... despite a strong cereal harvest this year, and 31 countries need emergency aid," the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said in its "Crop Prospects and Food Situation" report released Tuesday ahead of next week's Rome World Summit on Food Security, Agence France-Presse reports.
