Kidney disease patients with poor quality of life are at increased risk of experiencing progression of their disease and of developing heart problems, according to a study appearing in an upcoming issue of the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology. The findings suggest that quality of life measurements may have important prognostic value in these individuals.
At an event on Thursday to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961, co-hosted by the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) and the Brookings Institute, House Foreign Affairs Committee ranking member Rep. Howard Berman unveiled a discussion draft of the Global Partnerships Act of 2011, aimed at "reshaping foreign assistance, making it more relevant 'by incorporating the best practices and lessons learned over the last half century,'" he said, the Malaria Policy Center's "Malaria Watch" blog reports.
Prolacta Bioscience, the first and only company to offer human milk fortifier (HMF) made from 100% human breast milk for premature and critically ill infants, has announced the results of a groundbreaking study that will have long-term benefits for the nutritional care of very low-birth-weight preterm infants (less than 2 pounds, 12 ounces or 1250 grams) in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
The American Association for Dental Research (AADR) has announced David C. Johnsen, dean of the College of Dentistry, University of Iowa, as the recipient of the 2010 AADR Jack Hein Public Service Award. This award will be presented to Johnsen at the 39th AADR Annual Meeting & Exhibition in Washington, DC, March 3, 2010.
Study results spanning 22 years show that the risk for retinal detachment after undergoing phacoemulsification for cataracts has fallen dramatically, but that younger, and male patients are more at risk for this adverse outcome than their older, female peers.
