According to MassDevice.com, the online business journal of the medical device industry, medical device approval times under the Food & Drug Administration's 510(k) clearance process jumped 30 percent between 2005 and 2008. MassDevice's exclusive investigation of 10 years of FDA data, Eye on the FDA: H1 2009, shows that approval times for medical devices increased nearly 2 percent — while the number of 510(k) applications declined more than 19 percent — even as the FDA's budgets and staff levels rose.
For a skin cell to do its job, it must turn on a completely different set of genes than a liver cell — and keep genes it doesn't need switched off. One way of turning off large groups of genes at once is to send them to "time-out" at the edge of the nucleus, where they are kept quiet. New research from Johns Hopkins sheds light on how DNA gets sent to the nucleus' far edge, a process critical to controlling genes and determining cell fate.
Adults who move to farming areas where they experience a wider range of environmental exposures than in cities may reduce the symptoms of their hypersensitivities and allergies considerably. This is the result of new research from Aarhus University.
The new Childhood and Adolescent Immunization Schedule and the Adult Immunization Schedule for 2020 are out, just released by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). This is an annual event following its yearly revision.
