A landmark genetic study has identified multiple genes linked to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), or lupus, a debilitating autoimmune disease that affects an estimated 1.4 million Americans.
Phenomix Corporation today announced positive top-line results from a six-month Phase 3 study comparing dutogliptin 400mg and 200mg once daily as monotherapy versus placebo for the treatment of patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus. Dutogliptin is Phenomix' internally-discovered dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor.
On Monday, April 26, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and New Orleans Mayor-elect Mitch Landrieu will visit the St. Thomas Community Health Center in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Severe gum disease known as periodontitis can lead to tooth loss, and treating it remains a challenge. But new approaches involving silicon nitride, a ceramic material used in spinal implants, could be on the way. The surface of silicon nitride has a lethal effect on the bacteria that commonly cause periodontitis. Now scientists, reporting in ACS' journal Langmuir, are examining why this happens. Their findings could help inform future efforts to treat the disease.
"In addition, blacks tended to desire the body size they considered healthy while whites wanted a body size smaller than they thought healthy," says Mara S. Aruguete, professor of psychology at Stephens College, a women's college, in Columbia, MO.
