On the heels of the release of a draft report by an independent panel of experts examining the WHO's response to H1N1, BMJ News reports on a recently approved resolution and accompanying report released by the European Union parliament that calls on EU countries to revise their flu prevention plans "to make them more effective, coherent, and flexible" and for the WHO to revise its definition of pandemic to take into account not only geographical spread of disease but also severity.
The New Jersey Commission on Cancer Research (NJCCR) has awarded Janice Thomas, PhD, a post-doctoral fellow in the X.F. Steven Zheng laboratory at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey a two-year $100,000 grant (#DFHS13PPCO32) to further examine the impact of a protein 'trigger' involved in the regulation of cell function in breast cancer.
Boston Scientific Corporation (NYSE: BSX) has expanded the launch of its S-ICD System into parts of Asia. The first implant of the S-ICD System in Asia was performed in Hong Kong by Prof. Hung Fat Tse, Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine, The University of Hong Kong and Department of Medicine, Queen Mary Hospital in Pokfulam, Hong Kong, under the proctorship of Dr. Martin Stiles, Director of Electrophysiology, Waikato Hospital in Hamilton, New Zealand.
Chicagoan Ieshea Thomas is the first Midwest patient to receive a successful stem cell transplant to cure her sickle cell disease without chemotherapy in preparation for the transplant.
Three-quarters of older adults with a serious illness visit the emergency department during the last six months of their lives. Many will be admitted to the hospital. Some will never leave. But only a minority of patients have a conversation with their physician about preferences for end-of-life care before it is too late in their disease course for their wishes to be expressed.
