In experiments with isolated cystic fibrosis lung cells, University of Alabama at Birmingham researchers and colleagues from two other institutions have partially restored the lost function of those cells.
More than 5,000 sociologists will convene in Denver, Colorado, this August to explore ideas and scientific research relating to sociology and real utopias, as part of the American Sociological Association's 107th Annual Meeting. The idea of real utopias embraces an existing tension between dreams and practice, and challenges sociologists to ground utopian ideals in the real potentials of humanity.
Seemingly healthy adults, if they were abused or neglected during childhood, may suffer physiological consequences decades later. In research published online last week by the journal Neuropsychopharmacology, a team led by psychiatrists at Brown University and Butler Hospital found that healthy adults who reported being mistreated as kids appear to have an elevated inflammatory response to stress compared to adults who had happier childhoods.
Inspired by a chance discovery during another experiment, researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center have created a small molecule that stimulates nerve stem cells to begin maturing into nerve cells in culture.
