After more than a decade of fruitless entreaties from public health advocates, Democratic lawmakers have secured a landmark agreement that promises $300 million a year in new state funding to fortify and reimagine California's hollowed-out public health system, a complex network of services shouldered largely by the state's 61 local health departments.
Children who have a first elevated blood pressure at the doctor's office are not likely to receive the recommended follow-up blood pressure readings within a month, according to a study published today in Pediatrics.
The Miami Herald reports: "Some parts of the country already lack an ample supply of general internists, pediatricians and family physicians, forcing patients to drive further or wait longer for care. If a comprehensive health reform bill passes and extends coverage to millions of uninsured Americans, many are asking if there will be enough primary-care doctors to handle the increased demand for medical services."
A national study of older Americans shows those who have limited mobility and low physical activity - scientifically categorized as "frail" - are five times more likely to report that they often don't have enough to eat, defined as "food insufficiency," than older adults who were not frail.
