The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) announced today that it received $9.2 million in stimulus funding for scientific research and university recruitment during 2009. The majority of that funding, from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation, will support researchers in UTSA's College of Sciences and College of Engineering.
A scientific breakthrough might assist in the fight against mosquitoes. New research carried out at the University of Haifa in collaboration with researchers from other universities has chemically identified, for the first time, compounds released by mosquitoes' natural aquatic predators that function as warning signals for egg laying mosquitoes. Introducing these natural chemicals into mosquito breeding sites will cause the mosquitoes to sense risk of predation to their progeny and avoid laying their eggs there.
Research team from the University of Jena clarifies the mechanism of gliotoxin, a mycotoxin from the fungus Aspergillus fumigatus. The researchers present their findings in the current issue of the specialist journal Cell Chemical Biology
Veridex, LLC has announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted an expanded clearance for the CellSearch System to be used as an aid in the monitoring of metastatic colorectal cancer.
