The first genetic map of the plant Artemisia annua, which could "help scientists develop the species into a high-yielding crop" to fight malaria, was published in a study in the journal Science on Thursday, Reuters reports (Kelland, 1/14).
About 24,000 people are killed by lightning every year, with about 10 times as many people injured. The Wilderness Medical Society has issued important new practice guidelines for precautions that can lower the likelihood of being killed or injured and recommendations for effective medical treatments post-strike.
In a town hall-style meeting at the White House on Friday, President Obama ensured Hispanic community leaders and advocates that the U.S. will not alienate the group as a result of the recent H1N1 flu outbreak believed to have started in Mexico, the AP/Las Vegas Sun reports. Obama also assured the group that they will receive treatment related to the virus regardless of legal status.
Secretary of State for Health, John Reid, reaffirmed the British Government's commitment to tackling health inequalities and congratulated all those who have been leading local action, at a national conference in London today.
For the past 12 months, Ontario has surpassed the federal target for radiation therapy wait times, demonstrating that the province has continued to improve access to this important cancer treatment.
