For the first time, researchers at the University of Gothenburg have shown that metastases in patients with malignant melanoma gain access to the circulatory system not only through the outgrowth of new blood vessel branches, but also an alternative process in which one blood vessel divide into two parallel vessels bylongitudinal splitting.
Researchers have discovered a possible inherited component for lung cancer, a disease normally associated with external causes, such as cigarette smoking.
The risk of developing a blood clot in a vein increases the more time a person spends watching TV, even if they engage in the recommended amount of physical activity, according to research presented at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions 2017, a global exchange of the latest findings in the field of cardiovascular science.
In collaboration with a Brussels University team under the leadership of Nick Devoogdt and a French team from INSERM, Serge Muyldermans and his team, associated with VIB and Vrije Universiteit Brussel, have succeeded in developing the first patient-friendly, non-invasive method for differentiating dangerous strictures in blood vessels, so-called vulnerable atherosclerotic plaques, from less dangerous ones.
