New guidelines from the American Academy of Neurology identify the most effective treatments for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often called Lou Gehrig's disease. The guidelines are published in the October 13, 2009, issue of Neurology®, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.
Researchers at the University of California, Riverside have found that breathing "second-hand" smoke reduces the speed at which wounds heal, leading to greater levels of scarring.
Soon kidney transplant recipients would be younger under a proposal being considered by the nation's organ transplant network. This would replace the current ‘first-come-first-served' system and is intended to provide better matches between the life expectancies of recipients and the functional life of donated kidneys.
CytRx Corporation, a biopharmaceutical company, is permitted to re-enter the clinic with its orally administered molecular chaperone drug candidate arimoclomol as a therapeutic treatment for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease), following the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) acceptance of a revised clinical trial protocol.
