Realton Corporation, a pioneer in developing diode-pumped laser systems initially targeted to treat enlarged prostate, today announced the closing of its Series B financing co-led by OrbiMed Advisors and China Healthcare Partnership. Existing investor CSV Capital Partners will also participate in the financing. The financing will be used primarily to enhance Realton's marketing and distribution networks, expand its manufacturing capabilities and pursue new technology development.
Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius (D), President Obama's nominee for HHS secretary, and Nancy-Ann DeParle, the director of the White House Office for Health Reform, each met with congressional lawmakers on Tuesday to discuss plans for health care overhaul, CQ Today reports. HIV-infected patients who are falsely diagnosed as having tuberculosis have higher rates of mortality than those who are correctly diagnosed with the disease, according to a study conducted by researchers at University of California-San Francisco and Makerere University-Kampala.
The Association for Molecular Pathology (AMP) provided comments at the Secretary's Advisory Committee on Genetics, Health and Society (SACGHS) meeting on October 8. AMP opposes the patenting of all naturally occurring genetic material and has signed on as a lead plaintiff in the ACLU case challenging Myriad Genetics' patents on the BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 genes. AMP thanked SACGHS for studying how both patents and restrictive licensing limit patient access and potentially reduce the quality of tests.
