Females can mount more powerful immune responses than males, but the flip side of this enhanced protection against infections is a greater risk for autoimmune disorders. Shedding light on the underlying causes of the gender bias in autoimmune diseases, a study published by Cell Press August 22nd in the journal Immunity reveals that certain gut microbes prevalent in males can help protect them against type 1 diabetes.

Despite their widespread use by parents and caregivers, over-the-counter cold and cough medicines have carried a warning by the FDA since 2008, and still have the potential to cause serious adverse events in infants and children. Conservative therapies, including nasal suctioning, humidification, and nasal saline, should be recommended over routine use of OTC cough/cold products in infants and children, according to a new commentary published in the May 2010 issue of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery.
The chemical attacks in Syria could lower the bar for use of chemical weapons by terrorist organizations or rogue nations that could eventually pose a threat to the United States, says Alexander Garza, M.D., former assistant secretary of health affairs and chief medical officer at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
