A new study analyses the influence that certain birth and infancy characteristics have on mammographic density - an important indicator of breast cancer risk. The results reveal that women born to mothers aged over 39 years and women who were taller and thinner than the average girl prior to puberty have a higher breast density. This brings with it an increased risk of developing breast cancer.
The American Medical Association and other doctors' groups last Thursday rejected an offer from House Ways and Means Committee Chair Bill Thomas (R-Calif.) to block a scheduled reduction in Medicare physician reimbursements in exchange for participation in a quality of care program, CQ HealthBeat reports.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared Argentina and Algeria malaria-free in a historic announcement for the two nations.
"Coinciding with the 2012 General Assembly AIDS review, the Permanent Missions of Malawi and Luxembourg to the United Nations and UNAIDS organized a panel discussion to further understand the strategic investments needed for the AIDS response," a UNAIDS reports in a feature story on its webpage, adding, "The discussion brought together representatives of member states, U.N. organizations and civil society."
