About 6.2 million Americans suffer from heart failure, an incurable disease with a staggering mortality rate - some 40 percent of patients die within five years of diagnosis. Heart failure is one form of heart disease, for which new therapies are desperately needed.
Tyco International Ltd. today reported $0.55 in diluted earnings per share (EPS) from continuing operations for the fiscal fourth quarter of 2010 and diluted EPS from continuing operations before special items of $0.74 per share. Revenue in the quarter was $4.5 billion with organic revenue growth of 2% year-over-year. Cash from operating activities was $963 million and free cash flow was $598 million. These amounts included $39 million of cash outflows related to restructuring activities and acquisition-related costs.
According to a new study pregnancy and related hormonal changes that continue 12 weeks after giving birth increase a woman's risk of heart attack. Although the likelihood of having a heart attack during pregnancy is very low - just 1 in every 16,000 deliveries - it is still 3 to 4 times higher than non-pregnant women of the same age.
Compugen Ltd. announced today the development of its Protein-Protein Interaction Blockers (PPI Blockers) Discovery Platform, designed for the prediction of peptides to block disease associated protein-protein interactions. In a pilot validation run, predicted peptides showed positive results for drug targets in two cancer related pathways of interest to the industry.
"The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on Monday warned about a new mutant strain of the deadly bird flu H5N1 virus in China and Vietnam, saying there could be a 'major resurgence' of the disease," Agence France-Presse reports.
