Alzheimer's disease, a severe and progressive degenerative condition that leads to dementia, affects millions of people in the U.S. At present, there is no cure. Unless new treatments emerge, the Centers for Disease Control estimates that approximately 13.8 million people in the U.S. will live with Alzheimer's-related dementia by 2050.
By analyzing longevity data for professional Japanese traditional artists, researchers at Tokyo Institute of Technology have found that Kabuki actors, known for their vigorous movements, surprisingly had shorter lifespans compared with other traditional arts performers who lead mostly sedentary lifestyles.
"For the first time, with support from the GAVI Alliance, a pentavalent vaccine was introduced in Myanmar this week that will defend children against five potentially fatal diseases," Dagfinn Hoybraten, vice president of the Norwegian Parliament and chair of the GAVI Alliance Board, writes in the Huffington Post's "Impact" blog, adding, "Over the next six months, more than half a million children in the country will be protected from diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, hepatitis B (hepB), and Haemophilus influenzae type b.
