At least one in five people in countries for which data are available were infected with influenza during the first year of the 2009 H1N1 pandemic, according to a new study.
Researchers say that oral anticoagulation could improve the prognosis of atrial fibrillation patients who undergo percutaneous coronary intervention, even if they have a high bleeding risk according to the HAS-BLED score.
The UCLA Medical Group has again earned the highest rating possible in an annual survey conducted by CAPG, an association representing physician organizations in 38 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico.
Use of bioprosthetic heart valves has dramatically increased (from 18% in 1991 to 59% in 2003), mainly in older patients with comorbidities. This is due to the increased risk of bleeding complications associated with lifelong use of anticoagulation for mechanical prostheses.
According to obesity expert and University of Melbourne professor of medicine Joseph Proietto the high failure rate of weight-loss programs could be explained by growing evidence that an obese person's body is programmed to regain any weight that is lost. He said that authorities are wasting money on campaigns urging people to exercise and eat healthy food since obesity is "''physiologically defended".
