Scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory are proposing to use a supercomputer originally developed to simulate elementary particles in high-energy physics to help determine the structures and functions of proteins, including, for example, the 30,000 or so proteins encoded by the human genome. Structural information will help scientists better understand proteins' role in disease and health, and may lead to new diagnostic and therapeutic agents.
Over the past quarter century in Australia, cancer incidence rates have increased while deaths from cancer have steadily decreased. Those are some of the findings of a recent study published early online in the Asia-Pacific Journal of Clinical Oncology.
Results from the FUTURA/OASIS 8 study presented today at the ESC Congress provide initial evidence that a low dose of unfractionated heparin does not reduce the incidence of bleeding or vascular complications in PCI patients treated with the anticoagulant fondaparinux. Findings showed that the rates of peri-PCI major bleeding were 1.4% in those given low dose heparin and 1.2% the standard dose.
A new nanoparticle vaccine for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, has shown hints of protection and immunity in a preclinical study, safely eliciting the production of antibodies and antiviral T cell responses in mice and pigtail macaques.
