Pathway Medical Technologies, Inc., an innovator of endovascular treatments for peripheral vascular disease (PVD), today announced that the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has granted the company 510(k) clearance to market JETSTREAM G3™ SF (Small Fixed), the newest version of its peripheral revascularization catheter for the treatment of PVD.
"Doctor shopping," the growing practice of obtaining narcotic prescriptions from multiple providers, has led to measurable increases in drug use among postoperative trauma patients.
A new vaccine to prevent the deadly malaria infection has shown promise to protect the most vulnerable patients - young children - against the disease, according to an international team of researchers led by the University of Maryland School of Medicine's Center for Vaccine Development (CVD) and the Malaria Research and Training Center at the University of Bamako in Mali, West Africa.
In a unique and comprehensive literature review of poisoning deaths involving opioids from 1999 - 2009, the deaths involving methadone were found to be disproportionately high. Methadone represented less than five percent of all opioid prescriptions but is responsible for a third of the deaths. After four years of investigation, the major underlying cause was found to be fundamental misunderstandings about the properties of the medicine - a "knowledge deficit" - especially when converting patients from other opioids.
