Neuroscientist receives CAREER grant to research on auditory processing and sound localization

​Twenty years ago Khaleel A. Razak was an electronics engineering student focused on creating a telephone for hearing-impaired children in Chennai, India. Today he is a neuroscientist at the University of California, Riverside whose research on how the brain processes everyday sounds may lead to therapies for age-related hearing problems and Fragile X Syndrome.

Yoga program to help address coping skills and new lifestyle initiatives for domestic violence survivors

This week marks the first of its kind yoga-based collaboration between actor-filmmaker and yoga teacher Rich Tola's nonprofit organization, The Boulevard Zen Foundation Inc., and survivors of domestic violence residing at The Good Shepherd Shelter. The foundation brings yoga to shelters and was conceived by Tola upon completion of his film "Boulevard Zen," a story of one man who touches the lives of many through the practice of yoga.

Cancer patients less likely to receive life-saving therapy when suffering a heart attack

A major study of nearly 2 million heart attack patients has found that many who also had cancer were not offered a potentially lifesaving treatment, despite the fact it had major benefits.

New and expectant moms do not discuss preterm birth with healthcare providers, shows survey

A new survey shows a majority of new and expectant moms have not discussed preterm birth with their healthcare providers, despite the fact that early prenatal care, including discussion about lifestyle habits and medical history, may give babies a better chance of a healthy, full-term birth. This new survey, titled SPEAKing About Preterm Birth, was conducted among moms and healthcare providers including obstetricians/gynecologists and maternal fetal medicine specialists, by the March of Dimes and BabyCenter, and sponsored by Ther-Rx Corporation.
