The Pennsylvania Chapter of the American College of Physicians honored Gwendolyn Poles, DO, FACP, with the 2012 Robert S. Pressman Award for Distinguished Service to Internal Medicine. The chapter presented Dr. Poles with the award at their December annual awards dinner.
Patients treated for bladder cancer with a surgery known as radical cystectomy have worse outcomes if they are smokers, according to a systematic review and meta-analysis by Keck Medicine of USC. The study appeared in The Journal of Urology.

Cell Therapeutics, Inc. today announced it has conducted an immediate reduction in force of 36 employees. In a study of people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), those who took the drug donepezil were at reduced risk of progressing to a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) during the first year of the trial, but by the end of the 3-year study there was no benefit from the drug. Vitamin E was also tested in the study and was found to have no effect at any time point in the study when compared with placebo.
