Patients with schizophrenia report more intense perceptual illusions during the mirror-gazing task than do mentally healthy people, report researchers who also found that the patients were more likely to believe their illusions were real.
The prestigious Hartford Faculty Scholars Program has granted 11 geriatric social work researchers a two-year award that will provide career development, mentorship, and support for projects that will improve healthy outcomes for the country's aging population.
Treatment of hospital-related infections in the U.S. costs up to $11 billion a year and about half of those infections are related to medical devices implanted in patients. Until now, efforts to control drug-resistant biofilms on such devices have been largely unsuccessful.
A recent study confirms that the antioxidants and other plant-based nutrients in chocolate and cocoa products are highly associated with the amount of non-fat cocoa-derived ingredients in the product. The study expands on previously published results.
Near death experiences have often been described as "seeing life flash before one's eyes" or "intense feelings of joy and peace." Now researchers claim that levels of Carbon Dioxide or CO2 may be the causal link for these sensations. They believe that the CO2 alters the levels of certain chemicals in the brain and makes it see lights at the ends of tunnels or dead loved ones.
