Research performed by Nicole Lauzon and Dr. Steven Laviolette of the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at The University of Western Ontario has found key processes in the brain that control the emotional significance of our experiences and how we form memories of them.
Studies released today explore the neurological component of dietary disorders, uncovering evidence that the brain's biological mechanisms may contribute to significant public health challenges - obesity, diabetes, binge eating, and the allure of the high-calorie meal. The findings were presented at Neuroscience 2012, the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience and the world's largest source of emerging news about brain science and health.
Skilled Healthcare Group, Inc. today announced that its wholly owned company, St. Mary Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, LLC ("St. Mary HRC"), has completed the acquisition of a 118-bed, skilled nursing facility located in Davenport, Iowa. St. Mary HRC plans to begin building upgrades and improvements that are expected to increase skilled mix and to increase occupancy rates from current levels of approximately 50 percent.
The main drugs used to treat alcoholic hepatitis are not effective at increasing patients' survival, a major study has found. In a trial of over 1,000 patients, prednisolone and pentoxifylline, treatments recommended in international guidelines, did not achieve a statistically significant reduction in mortality after 28 days, 90 days or a year.
New research reveals more than half of Canadians living with atrial fibrillation do not fear having a stroke, despite AF-related strokes being more severe, debilitating and twice as likely to be fatal.
