The country's first approved gene therapy — approved Wednesday to fight leukemia that resists standard therapies — will cost $475,000 for a one-time treatment, its manufacturer announced.
University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center treated its first patient in a new clinical trial to validate the groundbreaking effects of the poliovirus on glioblastoma, a deadly Grade IV cancer of the brain.
Affymetrix, Inc. today announced that based on preliminary financial data, the Company expects to generate positive operating income and net income on a GAAP basis for the fourth-quarter of 2010. Total revenue for the fourth quarter is expected to be approximately $85 million and includes a $4.8 million milestone payment from a "Powered by Affymetrix" diagnostic partner.
Electrodes operated into the brain are today used in research and to treat diseases such as Parkinson's. However, their use has been limited by their size. At Lund University in Sweden, researchers have, for the first time, succeeded in implanting an ultrathin nanowire-based electrode and capturing signals from the nerve cells in the brain of a laboratory animal.
