The rapid evolution of HIV, which has allowed the virus to develop resistance to patients' natural immunity, is at the same time slowing the virus's ability to cause AIDS, according to new research funded by the Wellcome Trust.
St. Jude Medical, Inc. today announced European CE Mark approval and first implants of its Fortify™ and Fortify ST implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD) and Unify™ cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillator (CRT-D). The devices will be fully launched in Europe later this spring, and U.S. versions of the Fortify ICD and Unify CRT-D are expected to be launched later this year. The reduced size of these new devices compared to those of previous generations creates the smallest available device footprint in the industry.
A common practice of successive 12-hour shifts for U.S. hospital nurses leaves many with serious sleep deprivation, higher risk of health problems, and more odds of making patient errors, according to a University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) study presented today at the 24th annual meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies in San Antonio.
A new study has confirmed anecdotal reports that the recession has caused a decline in fertility treatments across the country. With price being the major deterrent, the report indicates that assisted reproductive technology (ART) such as In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is sought mostly by affluent, educated, Caucasian women and forecasts a 5% decline in IVF procedures by the end of 2009.
