Kaiser Permanente Southern California (KPSC) announced today that the Los Angeles and San Diego Medical Centers have received a prestigious recognition from Baby-Friendly USA, Inc., a non-profit organization that implements the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) in the United States. With this month's two designations joining Fontana, Downey and Riverside, KPSC now has five medical centers with Baby-Friendly status, a notable achievement, given that this certification has been granted to only 102 facilities in the United States, 33 of which are in California.
One of the most controversial bills this legislative session, that sought to put new restrictions on late-term abortions, was all but gutted Monday after a bipartisan coalition in the state Senate forced key changes. The original proposal would have cut by about six weeks the time women in Georgia may have an elective abortion. With the changes, it would now also include an exemption for "medically futile" pregnancies, giving doctors the option to perform an abortion when a fetus has congenital or chromosomal defects. The change hits at the heart of the controversy: Should fetuses once they hit 20 weeks be protected even if those protections mean women are forced to continue medically risky pregnancies?
The Washington Post reports that Arkansas has discovered "wiggle room" regarding the expansion. Meanwhile, debates in state legislatures continue over what should happen in Arizona, Utah, California and Texas. And, in Pennsylvania, Gov. Tom Corbett plans a meeting with Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.
Twenty years of mortality data from counties across the United States led to the striking discovery that living at higher altitudes may be a risk factor for suicide, according to a provocative study published online ahead of print in High Altitude Medicine & Biology, a peer-reviewed journal published by Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. The article is attached.
