Cancer cells avoid an immune system attack after radiation by commandeering a cell signaling pathway that helps dying cells avoid triggering an immune response, a new study led by UTSW scientists suggests.
The immune systems of HIV patients who are obese don't respond to antiretroviral therapy as well as do those of people of normal weight, according to a study conducted by researchers from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU). The findings were presented by San Diego-based Nancy Crum-Cianflone, MD at the annual meeting of the Infectious Diseases Society of America.
University of Iowa Health Care researchers reported important findings recently at a conference of specialists in New Orleans, La. The findings are from their study of helminthic therapy - using specially prepared worm eggs - to treat patients diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disorders that don't respond to standard treatments.
Nanofiber Solutions, LLC, in collaboration with Gail E. Besner, MD, chief of Pediatric Surgery, program director of the Residency in Pediatric Surgery and co-director of the Burn Program all at Nationwide Children's Hospital, recently was honored with the Ohio Third Frontier Technology Validation and Start-up Fund award.
One in three high school students reports riding with a driver who has been drinking, while nearly one in five was in a car where the driver had consumed marijuana, according to a new study from the University of Waterloo.
