Lead levels in foods prepared in aluminum pots from Cameroon exceed U.S. guidelines for lead consumption according to a new study published this month.
"It's easy to get the impression that recent controversy over research into mutated versions of the H5N1 flu virus has created a clear split between a scientific community that wants the research to proceed and the results to be published and a biosecurity community that doesn't," biological-weapons expert Tim Trevan writes in this Nature opinion piece.
Surgeons at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine are evaluating a new, combined surgery technique to remove cancerous tumors from the rectum. The hybrid technique uses the body's natural opening to remove malignancies and diseased tissue while also performing reconstruction.
Today the UN Millennium Project will deliver its reports to the UN Secretary-General. A series of articles to be published by The Lancet over the next few weeks—starting with an overview published online—will highlight the global efforts required in 2005 to ensure that the millennium goals are realisable by 2015.
