Patients with bipolar disorder are more likely to respond to lithium if the treatment is started early in the course of the condition, say researchers.
Researchers at the San Raffaele Hospital (Milan, Italy) published unexpected results of studies in which immature nerve cells (adult mouse neural stem cells) injected into the blood of mice with MS-like disease were able to suppress the immune attacks that damage the brain and spinal cord tissues.
A local research study conducted by KK Women's and Children's Hospital and Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School has found that pregnant patients benefit most from gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) screening as it allows for timely interventions and brings about health benefits that far outweigh the cost.
INSIGHTEC, the leader in MR-guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS) therapy, has announced that the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) has published the results of a pivotal study of their Exablate Neuro system for the non-invasive treatment of essential tremor (ET). The study met its primary endpoint with patients treated with Exablate Neuro demonstrating a clinically significant 47% improvement in a composite tremor score at three months as compared to no change in the sham cohort.
Inherited diseases such as cystic fibrosis can be caused by genetic "nonsense mutations" that disrupt the way human cells make proteins. David Bedwell, Ph.D., a professor in the University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Microbiology, says scientists are now closer to producing drugs that will fix this disruption and drastically improve treatment of genetic disease.
