Both the politics and policies of health reform continue to grab headlines, with reports highlighting how lawmakers are faring in their districts during this congressional recess. News outlets also are exploring how specific provisions of the new law will work.
A recently published study in The Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation shows that the patients who are most seriously ill before lung tranplantation have better one-year survival when Perfadex is used as the preservation solution for donor lungs compared with UW solution. Furthermore, the patients who received lungs preserved in Perfadex ran a significantly lower risk of being affected by rejection reactions requiring treatment.
Getting children to eat their vegetables can seem like an insurmountable task, but nutrition researchers at The University of Texas at Austin have found one way: school gardens and lessons on using what's grown in them.
Shops may soon be barred from selling energy drinks to children as the UK government gears up to tighten the efforts to curb childhood obesity. New research presented at the 2012 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) found that more than 4.5 million Americans are living with a total knee replacement (TKR), as the number of TKR surgeries has more than doubled over the past decade, with the sharpest rise among younger patients. Osteoarthritis continues to be the primary reason for TKR.
