Although immigrants from Italy and their offspring form one of the largest demographic groups in Switzerland, there are hardly any studies on their state of health and risk of mortality. In a first for Switzerland, Silvan Tarnutzer and Matthias Bopp from the University of Zurich's Institute of Social and Preventative Medicine calculated unbiased mortality risks for people with an Italian migrant background.
Generous public employee health benefits have survived major threats so far, but the growing gap between public- and private-sector benefits, coupled with new accounting rules for government agencies, could force public officials to make more far-reaching benefit changes
Patients hospitalized with advanced cirrhosis, a chronic and degenerative disease of the liver, are at increased risk of death. The tools currently used to assess that risk are limited in predicting which patients will need a liver transplant and which will be healthy enough to survive transplantation.
At present, the COVID-19 pandemic is still ongoing in many parts of the world, causing severe socio-economic problems.
