The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is spearheading an effort to create a national database and repository to enable researchers to identify predictors of effectiveness of various treatments for rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
The value of intersecting the sequencing of individuals' exomes or full genomes to find rare genetic variants - on a large scale - with their detailed electronic health record information has "myriad benefits, including the illumination of basic human biology, the early identification of preventable and treatable illnesses, and the identification and validation of new therapeutic targets," wrote Daniel J. Rader, MD, chair of the Department of Genetics, in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, in Science this week, with Scott M. Damrauer, MD, an assistant professor of Surgery at Penn and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Philadelphia.
On June 12th, Loyola University Medical Center hosted four of Southeast Asia's top orthopaedic surgeons. They are Hein Latt Win, MD, of Myanmar, who specializes in hip replacements; Istan Irsan of Indonesia (orthopaedic tumors); Azura Mansor of Malaysia (orthopaedic tumors); and Chia-Liang Ang of Sinapore (orthopaedic tumors and hip and knee replacements).
As the Medicare Model Guidelines-a listing of therapeutic categories and pharmacologic classes that Medicare Part D plans can utilize when developing their formularies-undergo revision for the first time in three years, the U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) is announcing its revision schedule and the expanded opportunities for public input as it develops Version 5.0.
