"In 2010, for the first time in more than 20 years, 140 midwives graduated in Laos but specialists say their skills may go untapped because the country's women are not used to visiting health workers," IRIN reports. "Only 34 percent of women in Laos seek the advice of medical professionals; even fewer see one when they are pregnant, according to government data from 2009-2010," the news service writes.
American Academy of Dermatology Association (AADA) President and dermatologist William D. James, MD, FAAD, along with other dermatologists and leading researchers today testified before a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) panel considering changes to the current classification of indoor tanning devices. Currently, the FDA classifies indoor tanning devices as Class 1, the category for items that have minimal potential to cause harm to individuals. Items in Class 1 include adhesive bandages and tongue depressors.
Many patients with a cerebral injury cannot move independently. Every year, 45,000 new stroke patients are affected in such a way. They have to be repositioned at regular intervals for a long period of time in order to prevent pressure ulcers that may develop as a result of patients' physical immobility.
ISPOR, the professional society for health economics and outcomes research-;explored the issue of wasted healthcare spending and how to improve health system efficiencies in the session, "How Can We Create Headroom for High-Value Care By Increasing Efficiency in Health Systems?" [IP9]
Another wild deer in New York state has tested positive for chronic wasting disease, (CWD), says the Department of Environmental Conservation. The latest confirmed case was in a 3-year-old doe less than a mile away from Verona where the first case in the wild was identified in a yearling.
