Food has never been more of a global commodity than it is today. But there is an urgent need to understand the problems that face future European food supplies within this global market. And so scientists and policy makers gathered in Budapest last week to push for a more holistic approach to the study of what Europeans eat.
Physicians apparently learn to "shut off" the portion of their brain that helps them appreciate the pain their patients experience while treating them and instead activate a portion of the brain connected with controlling emotions, according to new research using brain scans at the University of Chicago.
Before the whooping-cough vaccine came into widespread use in the 1940s, about 9,000 American children died from the infection each year. Today, thanks to the vaccine's efficacy, reported cases of whooping cough have dramatically declined and fatalities have dropped to up to 20 children each year.
The Board of Directors at Little Company of Mary Hospital and Health Care Centers voted to proceed with the completion of the Campus Transformation Project. Little Company of Mary obtained the Certificate of Need (CON) last spring, making it the boldest construction project since the Sisters opened the original hospital in the midst of the Great Depression - 80 years ago this January. It will create the Southwest Chicago area's first all-private room, private bath acute care hospital that includes a beautiful new Women's Center for Life and Health.
COVID-19 has created new problems for pregnant women in the United States, a group that already faced the highest maternal mortality rate in the developed world even before the pandemic.
