Researchers have found links between an individual's genetics and their response to treatment with chemotherapy. The findings, by researchers at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health, and colleagues, show how a genetic variant, located in the SOD2 gene, may affect how a person responds to the chemotherapy drug cyclophosphamide. Cyclophosphamide is used in the treatment of breast and other cancers.
When reauthorizing the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, Congress should address the "cultural tragedy" that married women in Africa are at an increased risk of HIV, a Kansas City Star editorial says.
KPLU 88.5's "Humanosphere" blog reports on a meeting of the HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN), "the world's largest HIV vaccine research network," held in Seattle this week. "We actually don't know what the agenda is," HVTN Executive Director Jim Kublin said during a lecture, titled "Scientific Agenda, the Next Seven Years," according to the blog.
