Public schools receiving reimbursements for linking students and their families to Medi-Cal / Healthy Families Insurance and covered services are finding it easier with the recently released web-based MAATS 2.0 application.
New research suggests that the gut microbiome may help prevent the development of cow's milk allergy. Scientists at the University of Chicago found that gut microbes from healthy human infant donors transplanted into mice protected animals exposed to milk from experiencing allergic reactions, while gut microbes transplanted from infants allergic to milk did not.
The study, which looked at the long-term effectiveness of anti-obesity medications, found that three drugs recommended for long-term use - orlistat, sibutramine and rimonabant, reduced weight by less than 5kg (11 pounds). This equated to a loss of less than 5% of total body weight.
The identification of genetic variants of the α-synuclein gene may help to predict which individuals with idiopathic Parkinson's disease are likely to experience fast progression of motor symptoms, according to findings from a US-based genetic study.
The International Centre for Eye Health based at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine joins the eye health community in celebrating the passing of the first United Nations resolution on preventable sight loss.
