Texting patients with schizophrenia and their lay health supporters in a resource-poor community setting is more effective than a free-medicine program alone in improving medication adherence and reducing relapses and re-hospitalizations, according to a study published April 23 in the open-access journal PLOS Medicine by Wenjie Gong of Central South University in Hunan, China, Dong (Roman) Xu of Sun Yat-sen University Global Health Institute, Guangdong, China and colleagues.
Eighty-four percent (84%) of votes cast by shareholders at Dendreon voted in favor of a proxy proposal calling for annual election of board members, a strategy - which if enacted - would increase board independence and accountability.
Accumetrics, Inc., developer of the VerifyNow System, the first point-of-care method for measuring platelet reactivity, announces that its market-leading VerifyNow P2Y12 Test was one of multiple methods evaluated in the POPular study, which was presented during a Late Breaking Clinical Trials session at the American Heart Association's annual Scientific Sessions.
New research indicates that inactive patients following cardiac surgery have a substantially higher risk of depression and that the number of patients suffering from depression after cardiac surgery is as high as 40%. Investigators recommend that cardiac patients should be assessed for depression and level of physical activity and remain as active as they safely can after surgery to minimize post-operative depression. The results are published in the December issue of the Canadian Journal of Cardiology.
