Viruses have evolved a broad range of strategies that enable them to evade the immune systems of their hosts. A team of researchers led by LMU virologist Professor J-rgen Haas has been studying a novel, recently discovered mechanism that pathogenic viruses exploit for this purpose, and their latest results could point the way to new antiviral therapies. The mechanism is based on the production of short RNA molecules, called microRNAs, by the virus.
Dr. García gave his talk at the headquarters of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) in Washington, DC, where he is participating as chief of the Chilean delegation to the 45th Directing Council, the annual meeting of the hemispheric organization where policies on critical health problems of the continent are being discussed.
A study by MassGeneral Hospital for Children researchers finds that parents who use both traditional cigarettes and e-cigarettes may be more receptive to smoking cessation interventions than parents who only smoke traditional cigarettes.
"With less than half the people who need treatment having access and with each day more people becoming infected with HIV than are started on treatment, we are mortgaging our future. But we are also exposing a fundamental social injustice - between the privileged and the forsaken - a divide we can bridge," Michael Sidibe, the executive director of UNAIDS, writes in a Daily Nation opinion piece.
World-renowned experts in the fields of antibiotic resistance will come together at a symposium at Murdoch University to talk about an issue which has the potential to become one of the world's biggest public health challenges.
