Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) affects more than 1.75 million individuals in the United States. Because the population is aging, that number will increase to almost 3 million by 2020. Between 80 and 90 percent of cases in this country are the dry version of the condition, for which no effective treatment exists.
Researchers from the Peninsula Medical School in Exeter have synthesized a new molecule which releases hydrogen sulfide (H2S) - the gas that gives rotten eggs their characteristic smell and which has recently been found to be produced naturally in the body - and discovered that it could in time lead to a range of new, safer and effective anti-inflammatory drugs for human use.
Media are invited to participate in the science and technology tours being held in conjunction with the Pittsburgh G-20 Summit Sept. 24-25. Twelve one-hour tours—hosted by the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center—are being offered on Monday, Sept. 21.
