(BRI) has announced that its antineoplaston A10 and antineoplaston AS2-1 therapy (ANP) has been granted orphan drug designation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ("FDA") for the treatment of gliomas. It is estimated that in 2008 more than 21,000 men and women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with this type of cancer, with prevalence estimated at approximately 84,000 cases.

The FDA has granted Orphan Drug Designation of Diamyd Medical´s lead drug candidate Diamyd®. Orphan drugs qualify for seven years of market exclusivity from the date of US marketing approval, tax credits for clinical research and a waiver for FDA user fees.
