More than 50,000 stem cell transplants are performed each year worldwide. A research team led by Weill Cornell Medical College investigators may have solved a major issue of expanding adult hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) outside the human body for clinical use in bone marrow transplantation - a critical step towards producing a large supply of blood stem cells needed to restore a healthy blood system.
It is possible to prevent certain injuries that can occur in radiation therapy against cancer. By blocking the activity of a plasma protein during and immediately after radiation, the patient can be protected against injury. This is shown in a new doctoral thesis at Umeå University, Sweden.
This World No Tobacco Day, Ontario's doctors are calling for renewed efforts to reduce the total number of smokers in Ontario. While the current government has shown leadership by implementing a number of initiatives to help reduce the use of tobacco and second hand smoke, there is still more work to be done.
According to the World Health Organization, the global prevalence estimates of sexually transmitted infections for men in 2016 were 2.7% for chlamydia, 0.7% for gonorrhea and 0.6% for trichomoniasis. In men, these and other sexually transmitted infections may lead to urethritis, inflammation of the urethra.
A new blood test using gold nanoparticles could soon give oncologists an early and more accurate prognosis of how cancer treatment is progressing and help guide the on-going therapy of patients.
