In this Kaiser Health News column, Rea Hederman and Paul Winfree, both of the Hertiage Foundation, write "the health overhaul could end up costing American taxpayers millions of dollars in higher health insurance premiums or put a tremendous amount of pressure on an already soaring national debt.
Most patients taking opioids for low back pain or other pain syndromes are prescribed low-to moderate doses, but a substantial number are given higher doses. Although there is no consensus on an absolute limit because tolerance varies over time among individual patients, what is known, however, is higher does are associated with elevated risks for side effects, addiction, overdoses and death.
Restrictions against using brand names have rendered pharmaceutical Direct-to-Consumer Advertising (DTCA) in Europe an informative rather than promotional exercise. DTCA is now broadening its scope, evolving from its narrow publicity orientation to a more comprehensive approach focused on improved patient outcomes and value addition.
A pilot study by Indiana University researchers found that whole-body vibration exercise may reduce pain symptoms and improve aspects of quality of life in individuals diagnosed with fibromyalgia.
