Proteins called broadly neutralizing antibodies (bNAbs) are a promising key to the prevention of infection by HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. bNAbs have been found in blood samples from some HIV patients whose immune systems can naturally control the infection.
Instead of television, Stanford Hospital is offering some patients a more high-tech form of entertainment, iPads. As part of a pilot program, the hospital has outfitted its catheterization and angiography laboratory with five of the tablet computers. They've been loaded with movies, books and games. They can also connect to the Internet through the hospital's wireless network.
A book containing misprints may cause annoyance for the reader, but typos in an individual's genetic blueprint (DNA) can mean serious disease or even death. The search for genetic correlates for the wide range of diseases plaguing humankind has inspired a wealth of research falling under the heading of genome-wide association studies (GWAS).
The fixed drug combination of aliskiren and amlodipine (trade name: Rasilamlo-) was approved in April 2011 for the treatment of people with hypertension in whom aliskiren or amlodipine alone has an insufficient effect.
