Researchers funded by the National Institutes of Health have developed a flexible brain implant that could one day be used to treat epileptic seizures. In animal studies, the researchers used the device - a type of electrode array that conforms to the brain's surface - to take an unprecedented look at the brain activity underlying seizures.
Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma Co., Ltd. ("DSP") and Sepracor Inc. today announce the successful completion of DSP's acquisition of Sepracor for US$23.00 per share in cash. DSP completed the acquisition through a cash tender offer and by exercising an option to acquire additional shares directly from Sepracor followed by a short-form merger of an indirect wholly-owned subsidiary of DSP with and into Sepracor on October 20, 2009. Sepracor is now an indirect wholly-owned subsidiary of DSP.
Research published today indicates that the risk of heart disease in adulthood is more strongly related to how quickly children gain weight between the ages of two and eleven than their actual body weight at any particular age. Scientists believe this is linked to differences in insulin processing in later life.
Providing a valuable incentive for U.S. investment in Australia, the Australian Government announced an agreement under which the Parliament will enact a AU$1.8 billion R&D tax credit that will deliver funding to innovative firms in industries including advanced manufacturing, information and communications technologies, and biotechnology.
