The UK Mission partnered with the Swedish Mission in Geneva to unveil a new art exhibition entitled 'The Silent Pandemic: No Time To Wait' to mark the start of World Antimicrobial Awareness Week today. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the greatest public health threats facing the world.
The signaling protein mTOR is a key regulator that controls cell growth. Dysfunction of mTOR increases not only the likelihood of developing cancer but also diabetes. In the current issue of the journal Cell Metabolism, Mike Hall and his team from the Biozentrum of the University of Basel describe how inhibition of mTOR signaling can impair carbohydrate metabolism and potentially lead to diabetes.
Dr. Michael Gabriel of GPM Pediatrics, a New York based Pediatric Center, comments on an article that says children are more likely to wash their hands when someone is around or watching. This new study could prove to be useful in reducing the amount of infectious diseases contracted by children.
Thanks to tiny microneedles, eye doctors may soon have a better way to treat diseases such as macular degeneration that affect tissues in the back of the eye. That could be important as the population ages and develops more eye-related illnesses - and as pharmaceutical companies develop new drugs that otherwise could only be administered by injecting into the eye with a hypodermic needle.
