U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius issued the following statement today after Anthem Blue Cross announced that they are delaying raising their rates:
One of the most challenging cases that a first-year neurology resident physician can face is a stroke patient in the emergency department.
The work is important because, in humans, inner ear sensory hair cells are a precious commodity. Humans are born with only about sixteen thousand of these sound detectors in each ear, which can be easily damaged by age, certain illnesses, exposure to loud sounds, and some medications. Once damaged, the cells do not easily grow back. And with the cell loss comes so-called irreversible hearing loss.
A new collection of articles appearing in The Journals of Gerontology, Series A: Biological Sciences and Medical Sciences examine how the basic biology of aging drives chronic disease.
