Using red blood cells modified to carry disease-specific antigens, scientists in the laboratories of Hidde Ploegh and Harvey Lodish have prevented and alleviated two autoimmune diseases—multiple sclerosis (MS) and type 1 diabetes—in early stage mouse models.
Researchers at the Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute (JHMRI) have identified, for the first time, the molecular components that enable the malaria-causing parasite Plasmodium to infect the salivary glands of the Anopheles mosquito-a critical and final stage for spreading malaria to humans.
According to new research findings presented this week at the 2019 ACR/ARP Annual Meeting, there is a profound ongoing need for additional medications to control the signs and symptoms of juvenile idiopathic arthritis, despite the availability of several approved biologic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (biologics).
"Now, with a leader of the [Muslim] Brotherhood's political arm in Egypt's presidential palace and its members dominating Parliament, some deeply patriarchal views the organization has long taught its members are spilling into public view," the New York Times reports, noting a statement released this week by the Brotherhood objecting to "a proposed United Nations declaration to condemn violence against women."
