Patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction who took the antifibrotic drug pirfenidone saw a significant reduction in a marker of heart muscle scarring compared with patients who received a placebo, based on findings from an early-phase trial presented at the American College of Cardiology's 70th Annual Scientific Session.
Infants with various forms of congenital heart disease require a stable source of blood flow to their lungs in order to survive until a more definitive operation can be performed. In a recent study, pediatric researchers compared two methods to provide that flow: a shunt to reroute blood and an implanted stent to maintain an open path for blood flow.
Numerate, Inc. and Intellikine, Inc. today announced the successful conclusion of their research collaboration to discover novel small molecule compounds targeting the PI3K/mTOR signaling pathway. The collaboration combined Intellikine's unique capabilities in x-ray crystal structure-guided medicinal chemistry and drug discovery with Numerate's powerful computational drug design platform to identify potent, selective and drug-like inhibitors of PI3 kinase alpha, an important target in cancer therapy.
Women with high physical fitness at middle age were nearly 90 percent less likely to develop dementia decades later, compared to women who were moderately fit, according to a study published the March 14, 2018, online issue of Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.
