Scientists have discovered new ways in which the body regulates blood clots, in a discovery which could one day lead to the development of better treatments that could help prevent and treat conditions including heart diseases, stroke and vascular dementia.
Most kidney transplant candidates are willing to receive a kidney from a donor at increased risk of viral infection, according to a study appearing in an upcoming issue of the Clinical Journal of the American Society Nephrology. The results suggest that kidney disease patients can make rational tradeoffs between the virtues and risks conferred by donated kidneys.
The combined use of spraying insecticide inside homes and insecticide-treated bed nets is no better at protecting children against malaria than using bed nets alone, a study in The Gambia suggests. The findings, published in The Lancet, should encourage donors to invest their limited resources in additional bed nets, the more cost-effective solution to tackling malaria.
A recent large German study has shown that a new combination therapy for breast cancer treatment leads to a lowered risk of the disease coming back. A commentary on this landmark clinical trial has been published in the latest issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology by the researchers Masey Ross and Charles Geyer Jr. from the VCU Massey Cancer Center. The commentary was titled, "Nab-Paclitaxel: A New Standard of Care in Neoadjuvant Therapy of High-Risk Early Breast Cancer?"
